Sandpoint Volleyball Club Magazine

It takes a substantial commitment of time and money to be a part of club sports.  The Sandpoint Volleyball Club works hard to come up with ways to raise funds to help offset the financial burden that club volleyball requires.  This year they are putting together a magazine featuring the teams with funds being raised through the sale of advertising to local businesses.  I had the opportunity to be the feature photographer in the production of the magazine which is scheduled to be finished the first week of February and should be available all over Sandpoint.

The first thing we needed was a cover shot, something that would be signature Sandpoint and also catch the eye.  Volleyball uniforms are not exactly insulated but nonetheless Beth Lewis braved the cold Winter day to work with us for a cover photo.  Here is the cover shot along with a couple more shots from the afternoon.

For the rest of the photography we moved indoors. We took some team photos and then moved on to some individual photos.  I wanted to be able to do some composite work with the shots so we took head shots and full body shots using a seamless paper backdrop like this one below.

Shooting this way made it a bit easier to do some composites.  Here is a single player version:

Now a single player along with a team photo.

The composite that I really wanted to put together was a team photo made up of each individual portrait.  I created one for each of the three teams that we created full body shots for.

To finish off the day four of the ladies stuck around to do some action portraits.  We set these up using five different lights, two high powered strobes were the main lights and then for some of the photos I used as many as three speedlights to ad some interest in the otherwise black background.

Nick’s Senior Photos (Sandpoint Photographer)

Since Nick moved to Sandpoint a little over a year ago I have had the opportunity to capture images of him out on the football field and the basketball court.  Now in his senior year I was honored to have the opportunity to take his senior photos.  Here are some of the final results.

Nick’s brother was gracious enough to volunteer to help me fine tune my lighting while Nick was preparing for the next series of photos.

To finish  out this post, here is a football themed Senior Poster

Weekly Sports Recap (09/12/2011)

My sports coverage was a little lighter this week due to some portrait work and a wedding in Sacramento.   I love shooting sports but I also have to pay my bills so portrait and wedding work always takes priority!  I did make sure to schedule my flights for the wedding so that I would only miss a Saturday’s worth of games though.  Here is this weeks recap of my sports and sports related work this last week.

Tyler’s Senior Photos (Sandpoint Photographer)

Tyler and I arrived at Memorial Field in Sandpoint at the brink of dusk to shoot some dramatic football themed senior photos.  We had to work quickly to be able to get some shots of the victory bell in the background before it became too dark to capture it adequately.

After dark we had the opportunity to do some fun lighting . . .

At the end of our we set up some of my favorite shots of the evening, I put a couple of flashes in the stands to use as a background.  It is very possible that this is the last football season that those stands will be there so years from now I am sure Tyler will look back with fond memories of those stands that have seated thousands of fans for many years.

For the final photo of this post I compiled a Senior Poster mixing together a great shot from our time together and a couple of photos from the last two football seasons.

Kyle & Kelsey – Sports Portraits (Priest River Photographer)

This afternoon I met with Kyle and Kelsey, cousins from Priest River to shoot some portraits of them.  The sky was dramatic which I really liked, but unfortunately it did not hold on to it’s payload for very long.  We were able to get a few shots and then the wind blew over one of my light stands, right into the dirt of the baseball infield.  As we were cleaning it up the snow began to fall and in the distance it was clear it was only going to get worse.  So, once again this week I have another photo shoot that had to conclude only shortly after it began!  I am looking forward to getting together with these guys again soon to finish up what we started, here is a look at a few of the shots we were able to get before getting snowed out!
